My friend and I had a nice chat today, and this question came up. When you look at modern air forces, you’ll generally see that every pilot flies the same aircraft for the same functions—the recon squad will fly one sort of plane, the attack squad will fly another, and so on. So why is it that, in…
Well, thought I’d offer my own opinion here. Personally, because of the European theater WWII parallels involved in the OYW, I see the GM as a representative of the M4 Sherman. This may be evidenced by the reasonably well-known fact that Shiro’s Ez8 is a reference to the “Easy Eight”, M4A3E8 Sherman variant. That being said, the Sherman is pretty infamous for its non-spectacular performance and high vulnerability. Yet, its ease of manufacturing made it a mainstay for the Western Allies who developed numerous variations on the platform for various different purposes.
The M4, despite its shortcomings, was able to be produced in very large quantities and thus the consensus was that it would be able to overwhelm enemy armor with numbers.
Does it make that much sense in the Gundam universe? Probably not. I’m probably underthinking it, but it’s possible it was just looking to draw parallels?
Thank you for allowing me to relive numerous moments and memories of my high school life with my high school friends. I sincerely enjoyed the ride. You were great.
Now I’m going to go do the exact same things that I did in high school with the exact same people I did them with in high school until the end of spring break.
Psh, like two years at college would change me.
I thought about it a little, and I think the reason why 0080 didn’t make much of an impact on me—and a lot of others—was that it just wasn’t long enough. The whole series was only something like six episodes. Granted, I suppose that’s okay, because 0080 didn’t really have a large cast to deal…
0080 is my favorite Gundam series and will probably always remain my favorite. This is actually mostly because of simplicity of plot, inclusion of charming, likable characters, as well as the total acknowledgement that this was a side-story and nothing that happened here had really any effect on the main UC storyline. I place 0080, 08th MS team, and MS IGLOO in the same category in that none of them had any effect on the storytelling of the Gundam timeline (for MS IGLOO this being particularly on purpose) and this may actually be a large contributing factor as to why I enjoy all of these so much.
As far as the other OVA, 0083, goes, I find it completely forgettable, possibly because there really isn’t a single character that I personally find very interesting or likable beyond “He’s a badass, etc.” And although this is a bit of a paradox: I would have hated to see 0080 become that to me as well.
For me, 0080 does what it set out to do and I am extremely happy it exists…unlike the entire AU/UC post CCA.
That being said, I would have loved to have had more episodes of 0080 to enjoy.. but then I wouldn’t have been able to justify rewatching it over a weekend every few months.
(}) <— It’s a Mazda emblem. My mind is blown.
I guess I’m a few months late on this, but..
Over my winter break, I visited the model/DVD store in SF (Sun Entertainment) that I often bought from only to find that it had closed. Today, when I called home to report midterm results, my father told me that he had found out that the owner had been in a car accident and had subsequently passed away.
I’m even more heartbroken than I was before. I honestly do not think I would have been so heavily into Gunpla if it had not been for this store.
in my prayers,
RIP Mr. Kent Sun.
